USB devices in mtab, not fstab

I'm running a brand new install of Kubuntu Breezy on an Averatec 3715-EH1 laptop with a VIA motherboard. When I insert a USB storage device (flash drive, iPod), it shows up in mtab and mounts, but not in fstab. I can see it in the /media directory, but not in the "storage devices" section in Konqueror. Thus, I have to mount and umount it from the command line. This is okay, but I'd like to get everything working correctly, and I'd also like to learn a little about Linux in the process. Could this be a problem with hald?

Thanks for any help,

The mtab file shows only mounted filesystems, thus your storage devices will show up there when they're mounted. fstab contains filesystems that may or may not be mounted at the present time. If you want an entry for your storage device in there, you can add it. Read this for info about editing your fstab.
