usb device names

Hi,
I am running slackware 10.0 (2.4.26 kernel) and having some issues with the way device names get assigned to usb devices. I am finding that the different usb devices I plug into the usb port get assigned a variety of names (sda1,sda2, sdb1) and so I have to look through the /var/log/messages file and then rewrite the fstab every time I switch devices. Is there anyway to make device names permanent so I don't have to do this?

I think it's assigned by port, so maybe try to remember which device you plug into which port.

Thanks for the reply, but I don't think that's it - I am using a laptop with a single port on the side and one more on the back, and I always use the one on the side. The one on the back is too far away to reach
