What does the commnad ' dmesg ' say when the mouse is plugged in?

More info on system.
Kernel version?
Output of the commands

Is the USB version 1.0-1.1? There are two modules for it. ohci-hcd(the more popular one) or uhci-hcd. If it is USB version 2.0 it should use ehci-hcd module. Not name may vary depending on installed kernel.

Lets start from there.
