USB 300G maxtor hard drive and usb dvd writer

I have a 300G usb maxtor hard drive, I plug it to my fedora 13 pc, nothing happens, I dont see the hard drive in my computer.
Sshould fedora mount the right away or is there a process to follow (mount/unmount), if yes, can you please pojnt me to a step by step.
Also, I need to attach an external usb dvd writer, would it be the same thing or would it be recognized by fedora

Thanks in advance

for the drive try
Code:
# mount -t vfat /dev/sdb1 /mnt
as root. If fedora doesnt support root login then as user try
Code:
$sudo mount -t vfat /dev/sdb1 /mnt
then type in your password
