usb 2.0 external hdd

Hi, i was just wondering how i would go about installing any distro (i'm planning to use the newest version os SuSE or Mandrake) on an external hard drive, and have it so when the hdd is plugged in and on, and i turn on my computer, it boots to linux, but when the hdd is not connected, it just goes normally (winxp pro)...

is all i need to do change the boot order? or is there a certain file i need to include with autorun, or such...

sorry i'm a newb..haha
