Question Upgrading Graphics Card - Compatibility Concern

Hi folks,

I'll be taking devliery of my 30" Dell Widescreen LCD hopefully tomorrow barring any problems with UPS.

I'll be hooking this sucker up to my windows box and hopefully my linux machine.

At the moment I'm running dual 19" CRT's hooked up to an IOGear KVM switch.

However, before hooking it up to my Linux box, I need to upgrade my graphics card to one that supports the resolution requirements for this LCD. And find a Dual Link Compatible KVM Switch.

I'm thinking about going with this card:

http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16814133176

except I'm concerned about whether or not it will work with linux or not. I'm currently running RHEL3, i know that's really old, but I was planning on upgrading the machine to rhel4 soon anyway and may just do that if required for this new card.

What do you guys think about this upgrade?
Have any of you run something similar to this?
Any of you using KVM switches that utilize Dual Link DVI? If so, which one and what's your opinion on it?

Thanks

I have a 32-inch LCD with a Geforece FX5500. I can attain a resolution of 1280x768. 16:9 resolutions of 1366x768 aren't really well supported by graphics cards at the moment, because 1366 is not divisible as 8, newer nvidia drivers fix this however. I do not know of any DVI KVM switch, but they must exist.

Thanks for the reply.

However I should have stated that my 30" Dell LCD has a max resolution of 2560 x 1600 which is what the graphics card I posted in my original link can support and is recommended for the monitor.

That is where my concern lies, whether or not that graphics card will work on my machine.

I've decided to go on a different path than worrying about the compatibilty of this high end graphics card.

I'm just gonna add a 20" Dell LCD (rotated vertically) next to my 30" LCD and go for a dual screen setup again. This way rather than spending all this money on upgrading the machine to support the 30" and having to buy a dual link dvi kvm, i could instead add another LCD using less money and still be able to use my existing graphics card and KVM switch. The loss of quality connecting via VGA on my linux server to the 20" LCD isn't that big of a deal for me. At least in the future I can upgrade the KVM to support DVI and then later hook up via DVI if I want to.
