unstable behavior of mouse wheel on Fedora 20, Dell E6400

hello,
need help to troubleshoot unstable behaviour of Wireless IntelliMouse Explorer 2.0 wheel on freshly installed Fedora 20 x86 on Dell E6400.

Situation:
after initial install i had to disable a lanchpad to get the mouse to work.
After that for about 10 hours wheel scrolling worked fine. All 4 buttons worked and continue to work correctly, the only functionality that is not stable is wheel scrolling - it worked for an hour or so , then stopped, now works again.
I have fresh batteries in the mouse. Mouse is on the wooden desk right next to the laptop.

Troubleshooting:
nothing in /log/messages
nothing in ~/.xsession-errors

The /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-vmmouse.conf ( there is no /etc/xorg.conf ) has been appended with line in bold:
Code:

Section "InputClass"
        Identifier      "vmmouse"
        MatchIsPointer  "on"
        MatchTag        "vmmouse"
        Driver          "vmmouse"
        Option          "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
EndSection

once i did that wheel immediately started to function again ( no restart of X or laptop) for about 15 minutes. Then it stopped. I rebooted the laptop but no effect.

Just a minute ago it started working again.

I'm bedazzled .

Update:
dont see anything about the mouse in the /proc/bus/input/devices
