unresolved symbols coming out my ears

ok ive finally got my slack 9.1 running my raid-0 sata hdds on NF7-s, which involved compiling a new kernel.
i had all the nforce drivers installed and working fine before, on the standard slack kernal.
Problem is, now when i try to do an install, pretty much every line gives me an 'unresolved symbol', so my net, audio, etc dont work for that kernel. however, when i switch back to the other they are fine.
i thought it could be because i forgot some kernel modules, but i loaded the orig slack conf, and duplicated all those net/audio settings, to no avail.
the new kernel, i compiled it with editing the makefile and adding a suffix to identify it, like i was told. and i did do 'make modules'. i have also tried re-making the nforce2 drivers.
the nvidia site says its problably due to a mismatch btw running and kernel source. Which i prb agree with, but how to fix?

did you get the new system.map file into the /boot directory and associate it with the new kernel? In other words, does the system.map file/symlink in /boot match the actual system.map for the running kernel? ditto that for the new .config also.

and did you do make modules install as well?

these are the kinds of things I have forgotten before, I'll pass them on to you, hope it helps
