Unable to get 2560x1600 resolution on HDMI for NVIDIA GeForce 730 graphics card

Hello folks,

I have a dual monitor (Dell U3014) setup running Debian 8.6.0. Graphics card is MSI nVIDIA GeForce GT 730 (N730-2GD3V3), and I've installed the nVIDIA driver for Linux. I am running Debian 8.6.0.

One of the monitors is connected via DVI and the other, HDMI.

The DVI monitor displays the full 2560x1600 resolution but I'm only getting 1920x1200 on the HDMI monitor. I've tried switching monitors, but got the same problem so I know it's not the monitors. Someone on another board suggested that maximum resolution on HDMI might only be 1920x1200 but I connected the monitor to my laptop via HDMI and got 2560x1600.

I pasted in the output of xrandr below.

Any ideas why I can't get 2560x1600 on both monitors?

xrandr output:

You may try the ignoreEDID option in your xorg.conf file. See this post for more details.

Hi Daedra,

Thanks for your input.

It seems like I have no xorg.conf file. I searched in all directories, but found nothing. I'm running Debian 8.6.0.

Any other ideas?

Code:
su -
nano -w /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/monitor.conf
Put your option in there, save. Assuming you are using nano.

something's wrong with the frequencies there.
should be ~60Hz?
are you sure you got the syntax for adding the modeline right?

also, if both monitors are connected to the nvidia card (are they???), shouldn't nvidia's driver utility show you what's available & apply it?
that's "nvidia-settings".

If you disconnect the DVI one and restart X, is the mode available then on the HDMI one?

$ xrandr

xrandr to see if it lists it as a known option. Otherwise the GPU probably doesn't support it (2560x1600 max for 2 displays). Check the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file for EDID of the monitor and compatible GPU modes.

$ less /var/log/Xorg.0.log

The specs:

Thanks for your suggestion.

I first executed nvidia-settings. I found that under "XServer Display Configuration," there's a "Save to X Configuration File." Selected that, then copied and pasted into nano.

In the Device section, I added this line:

Option "IgnoreEDIDChecksum" "DFP-1"

Then, saved it to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/monitor.conf and rebooted.

Still did not work.

Here is the contents of the file as it is:

Two things, first try saving that file as /etc/X11/xorg.conf, not /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/monitor.conf, it shouldn't matter but try it. Second are you sure your second monitor that is giving you problems is DFP-1? I only ask because generally DFP-1 is your first monitor not your second. It may be correct but that's not how it is on my system. Could you possibly post a screenshot of your nvidia-settings/X Server Display Configuration.

I just looked at your xorg.conf file. It looks like your second monitor is DFP-1, so I am probably incorrect on my second suggestion.

Thanks, Shadow_7.

The specs for my card has this at the bottom line:

* - 3840x2160 at 30Hz or 4096x2160 at 24Hz supported over HDMI. 3840x2160 at 60Hz supported over DisplayPort

So it seems I should be able to get 2560x1600 on HDMI for the card (I'm sure the monitor's capable of that resolution on HDMI because I plugged it into my laptop's HDMI and got 2560x1600).

In any case, I disconnected the DVI monitor, rebooted, and executed xrandr:

It may be correct but that's not how it is on my system. Could you possibly post a screenshot of your nvidia-settings/X Server Display Configuration.

I just looked at your xorg.conf file. It looks like your second monitor is DFP-1, so I am probably incorrect on my second suggestion.
Daedra,

(1) I tried saving both as /etc/X11/xorg.conf, then rebooted. No change. Tried saving as /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/monitor.conf with no change as well.

(2) Will post the screenshot of nvidia-settings in a few hours or so after I run and errand and figure out how to take screenshots in Debian, but for now I can tell you (from eyeballing the settings), undeer "X Server Display Configuration," DFP-0 is the monitor on DVI (2560x1600) and DFP-1 is the monitor on HDMI (1920x1200).

$ xrandr --output HDMI-0 --mode 2560x1600 --panning 2560x1600+0+0 --primary

Or use that nvidia-xconfig or whatever.

Screen 0: minimum 8 x 8, current 4480 x 1563, maximum 16384 x 16384
HDMI-0 connected 1920x1200+2560+363 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 640mm x 400mm

Note the max 16384x16384 pixels that the GPU is capable of, while probably not an output option, you can have virtual real-estate that uses a fair amount of that. My hp stream 11 has an 8192x8192 max and does a virtual 4096x4096 without breaking a sweat. Just change the --panning parameters to gain extra virtual space with mouse movement to slide around your native resolution view window. The +#+# is what is concerning and probably in the way. Which --panning +0+0 should reset. Currently at +2560+363, which is odd-ish as such a screen would be right of and only slightly below another and overlapping with the screen at +0+0 is a high probability.

$ xrandr --output HDMI-0 --panning +0+0

With intel and amd GPUs, the Xorg.0.log is a lot more informative of available modes. Those reported by the EDID of the monitor, and those by the driver for the GPU. nVidia doesn't seem to be as informative in the logs. Using nvidia-xconfig is probably the better route for getting your desired results. Or you might try the nouveau driver although the few older nVidia gpu's I've had to deal with in the past didn't work well in anything other than the proprietary driver. And even that felt crippled since Xorg.0.log and xrandr were mostly useless for niche uses. Twin View, special kernel, and all sorts of other nVidia headaches bitd. Which probably hasn't changed much.
