udma controller -- RH7.2

Hi ,
first post here , let me explain my problem here in the hope someone can help me out .
i did put an udma 100 controller from CMD (type CSA-649U with bios 1.9.14) in my compaq P166mmx server , another powersupply and another stick of memory .

it has always been that after a certain time , the screen of the linux goes blank into save mode . no problem so far . but if i let my linux box idle for a bit longer , it seems that also something else goes into save mode or so . how i know : if i try to enter a samba share it doesn't work , when i try to browse to a website or ftp that runs on the server .. no go , it just sits there and doesn't even give a timeout (webserver) or even no 'url not found' message. SSH the same thing . Then , when i hit a key on the keyboard suddenly everything opens within 1 second .

I also have a loooot of '[10053] software caused connection abort' in mirc .

I did a fresh install of CC 1.1 . problem is still there .
it's not the memory , i replaced that again with the old stick , same problem .
when i put the harddisk on the onboard memory controller , everything is normal ... so it must be that udma card .

one more thing about the problem :
when i do shutdown -r now , it reboots and then doesn't find a disk on the controller .
when i power the machine down and power it back on , it works again .

installing that bios partition is a no go . i tried several harddisks , tried a couple fdisks and formats but no success . i cannot even think about this board having the option to powersave actually . i never touched it , and when i stick it on the onboard controller it doesn't do it .
there's also no option to go into the configuration of the controller .. it has none

then i did /sbin/hdparm -S 0 in the hope that would help . that wasn't the problem either . since the harddisk isn't spinning down or so . first screen goes blank (powersave = normal) , then after a couple more minutes i suddenly cannot access samba shares and websites anymore (only internet connection keeps on working) . when i hit control it kinda 'wakes up' , immediately shows me website and samba shares and creates some harddisk activity .

Well that's it . i said things twice maybe , but i copy pasted a big part from another forum thread and added some other things . Cause on the other forum they cannot help me with this.

hope i find my luch over here !!

Thanks a lot already
(hey lemme try a special linux smiley , looks fun)

If it's supposed to be a server, why have you enabled APM/powersaving modes to begin with? Funnily enough, when it's sleeping, it won't respond to (network) events.

network activity doesn't seem to stop . i mean : i never lose internet access .
it's just that apache , samba and all these services go down .
when i put the harddisk on the onboard motherboard controller it doesn't give me these problems . (i never activated powersaving either)
screen always powersaves , that's allowed for me .

you know a way to disable ALL powersaving on whole the box ? i wanna try !

(btw , i need the udma controller to access the 40gig i'm gonna stick in in a couple of days/weeks)

thanks for the input !

Disabling apm is as simple as disabling apmd - on a RedHat system, this would be achieved by:

chkconfig --level 123456 apmd off
never start apmd at startup ever again

/etc/rc.d/init.d/apmd stop
stop apmd if it's currently running.

that apmd isn't available on my system .
i did a find / and nothing found .

then i tried that chkconfig , and it sais :
error reading information on service apmd : No such file or directory .

I use a stripped down version of REd hat 7.2 (just for firewall , apache , samba and ftp) -- Clarkconnect 1.1--

great info though , thank you for the support
