It generates the device node but when i try to moung it it either says there is no medium in the drive or it says it is not a valid block device or something. has anyone set up one of these successfully

You havn't said which kind of 15-in-one card reader.
I have successfully installed a 7-in-1 reader under fedora and ubuntu - this probably won't help you much. With udev, they just work. Without udev I had a little more fiddling to do.

But accounding to the gentoo wiki
Quote:
If you have a several-in-one card reader, you'll probably have to also set Device Drivers --> SCSI device support -->[*] Probe all LUNs on each SCSI device (kernel 2.6). These readers are usually set up with one slot as the primary slot, so if this option isn't set, you won't be able to see the other slots.

Glad to help

Gentoo is a good choice for folk who want to learn a lot in a short time. The Gentoo wiki and other sites are extraordinarily helpful. However: be prepared to read them.
