Ubuntu - Sound from only one speaker

When running Edgy and Dapper, sound would only come out of one of my speakers. I remember installing alsamixer or something, and it didn't even work. Windows lists it as "High Definition Audio Device". This is one thing that REALLY aggravates me when it comes to Ubuntu, and one of the major reasons I don't have it installed anymore.

Edit: I loaded my Dapper LiveCD, and sound works correctly. This slightly worries me as future updates might break my sound.

You say you remember installing alsa mixer but it didn't work? What didn't work about it? It either works or it doesn't, and the main reason it generally doesn't run or 'work' is because no onboard sound devices are present for it to 'work on' OR because the necessary module or static kernel support for the sound hardware is not present.
I guess you tried in a root console to type 'alsaconf' or 'alsaconfig' (I can't recall which it is) or tried 'alsamixer' from a root console?
What exactly IS the sound hardware in question here?
