Ubuntu Nvidia / CUDA driver installation

I am trying to install an NVIDIA driver (actually want to use CUDA) on a Ubuntu 9.04 laptop. Complete newbie and have no idea how to do this. Have found some stuff on google but having trouble. When try to run the NVIDIA installation I keep getting told to exit X windows but I have followed directions to exit X windows so I think I'm not in X windows.

Has anyone any experience with this?

What distribution do you use?
On an Fedora-like distro try:

Code:

su - 
/sbin/init 3

and to go back to do GUI after
installing the nvidia driver:

Code:

su -
/sbin/init 5

i now saw that you are using Ubuntu, so do a

Code:

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop

If you use an Debian-like distro, try:

Code:

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop

and analogous to restart it:

Code:

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start
