Here goes something wrong. You are using the VESA driver, not the Intel.

Code:
(II) LoadModule: "vesa"
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers//vesa_drv.so
(II) Module vesa: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
compiled for 1.5.0, module version = 1.3.0
Module class: X.Org Video Driver
ABI class: X.Org Video Driver, version 4.1
(II) VESA: driver for VESA chipsets: vesa
While it should be something like this:

Code:
(II) I810: Driver for Intel Integrated Graphics Chipsets: i810, i810-dc100,
        i810e, i815, i830M, 845G, 852GM/855GM, 865G, 915G, E7221 (i915),
        915GM, 945G, 945GM, 965G, 965G, 965Q, 946GZ
(II) Primary Device is: PCI 00:02:0
(--) Chipset 945G found
(II) resource ranges after xf86ClaimFixedResources() call:
I am not especially fond of that empty xorg.conf files, leaving everything to the xorg driver to find out. This is the xorg.conf file I am using in my 945 Intel system.

Note that I commented out "vesa" in the driver section an inserted "i810" instead. I know there is an "intel" driver as well, as far as I can remember there were no differences between "i810" and "intel".

Note that my highest resolution is 1024x768 24 bit depth. This is not the resolution I use, I have the 915resolution installed, and actually I use 1152 x 864.

915 resolution has been removed from interpid, supposedly the fixes he needs have been incorporated into the 'intel' driver.

My question to the OP would be did you Copy the BusID and Identifier from my example into your config ? it looks like you did, and you shouldn't have... Only the Driver name shold have been changed in your config. the rest was there just as a place holder so you could easily identify the section the change should have been made in..

My example
Code:
Section "Device"
	Identifier	"intel 845"
	Driver "intel"
	BusID "PCI:1:5:0"
EndSection
You then posted this..
Code:
Section "Device"
     Identifier "intel 845"
     Driver "intel"
     BusID "PCI:1:5:0"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
     Identifier "Configured Monitor"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
     Identifier "Default Screen"
     Monitor "Configured Monitor"
     Device "Configured Video Device"
EndSection
And the device names do NOT match.. which could be why it's now defaulting to VESA

Change the Identifier in the Device Section to match the Device in the Screen section
Code:
Section "Device"
     Identifier "Configured Video Device"
     Driver "intel"
     BusID "PCI:1:5:0"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
     Identifier "Configured Monitor"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
     Identifier "Default Screen"
     Monitor "Configured Monitor"
     Device "Configured Video Device"
EndSection
That BusID was the location of the card in my system.. I have no Idea what yours is..
probably best to just remove that line or copy the correct one from the backup of your xorg.conf file..

Fars, that was smart to see that discrepancy in the Device.

BusId could be commented out, you need that only if you have more video cards in your system which work at the same time.

I have not seen that the resolution issue is solved in the Intel driver, at least it hasn't made it yet to Debian Testing. There is a .deb available on the web site I pointed to, it should be installable in Ubuntu.

I installed the 915resolution with the line of code. I saw 'somewhere' patch code successful but I still do not the desired resolution.

I have to revert to an old xorg.conf when I boot up. Every time I try to change it to add my Intel configuration I can't boot up.
Here's my x.org.conf:

Code:
# xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# Note that some configuration settings that could be done previously
# in this file, now are automatically configured by the server and settings
# here are ignored.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Section "Device"
	Identifier	"Configured Video Device"
	Driver "vesa"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
	Identifier	"Configured Monitor"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
	Identifier	"Default Screen"
	Monitor "Configured Monitor"
	Device "Configured Video Device"
EndSection
Thanks for the help.
