Ubuntu ESS 1869 sound problems

Hi I'm a newbie to ubuntu V6.06 (or linux for that matter) and I have an ESS 1869 audiocard in an old Compaq Deskpro PC (1999). I've managed to get sound after using the following parameter in the /etc/modules file:
sb esstype=1869 io=0x220 irq=5 dma=1
The problem is that the sound quality is very bad. When I boot the PC with W2K the sound is OK.
All help welcomed.
Thanks!
