Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

I for one am still interested in more information, such as from some of the commands onebuck suggested for getting info from/about the adapters & frequencies/channels, etc., but you're right, with the cordless phone totally disconnected, and the problem still happening, it doesn't seem to be the phone itself... Unless, maybe your phoneline is tapped with a wireless transmitter (a bug) that activates when your phone rings and transmits the phone call to the grey unmarked van parked up the street.

This is HIGHLY bizarre, and interesting.

One thing that sticks out for me now, is right in your first post:
Quote:
We have a single modem for our Phone, TV & internet.
That's the only connection I currently see, between the phone and internet. And what I'm reminded of, is when using a dialup connection in the old days, and the phone line has call-waiting, the beep from the incoming call would kill (or injure) the modem connection. However, for anything like this to be happening here, the internet connection would need to be getting killed at the modem rather than in the wireless signal or router, and this should affect both/all machines equally.

Based on the information presented up to this point, I'm stumped.

Any ideas.
Thanks
You stated further along that you unplugged the phone. You did try changing the channels for the wireless devices?

You also stated the test was done on the M$ system with this action but nothing about the Linux side.

What about the equipment information & the command output requests? We are asking these questions for a reason.

I don't know what channels you are referring to changing and as I stated - this test was done with 2 computers sitting side by side with Windows and Ubuntu (Linux) running.
I am not a programmer or a technician and can stick with what works - Windows..

Hi,

I'm sure you received a manual for the modem and that same material will indicate the channel selections available for it. As for the router/wireless AP you have the ability to change that to alternate settings. We can show or tell you how if you provide the requested information!

If you provide the requested information then we could possibly aid with a potential solution. If you don't have the manual for any of the equipment then look at the hardware it self. The labels on each will will show the manufacture & model numbers. Share the information if you expect any further help.

Sample output for 'ifconfig -a','iwconfig' & 'iwlist wlan0 scan';

The above is a sample of what we need from you. Along with the modem manufacture & model we could then possibly diagnose the problem and recommend what needs to be done. The above shows us loads of information that will aid.

Please notice in the 'iwlist wlan0 scan' output the channel settings. We could setup the AP/wireless router to a different channel & then set the channel for the wireless on whichever system you would find necessary. It doesn't require you to be a programmer or technician.

Just provide the requested information if you expect us to aid you in the proper manner. We are not standing behind you.

BTW, by unplugging the phone system and not testing with the Linux system but the M$ really doesn't mean a thing. You could have other wireless devices that interact with the phone system while it is plugged in and cause signal overlap. Since this is repeatable with the phone system then I do believe it is a channel problem and by setting thing up on alternate channels then things should be good. I've had cases where the phone had to be replaced because of conflicts.

Thanks for your clearer explanation Gary, as I stated I have no concept of what your previous instructions referred to.

As I stated twice BOTH computers ( Windows * Ubuntu (Linux) were side by side & running when I unplugged the phone.

- unplugged the cordless phone, called the house with my cell phone & Ubuntu disconnected/dropped the wireless signal..............the Windows laptop sitting 3 feet away still running, so I don't see the phone as part of the issue.

this test was done with 2 computers sitting side by side with Windows and Ubuntu (Linux) running.
