Tv-out overlay?

In windows xp, when you start playing a movie the movie appears in fullscreen on the tv while you can surf the web and use other apps on the monitor in default resolution (think it's called overlay in english). Is this possible in linux?

Else, is it possible to use 1024x768 onthe monitor while using 800x600 on the tv?

Else, can I set upa quick command (like Ctrl + v or something) to activate tv-out/switch to the supported resolutions for tv-out?

Yes, kinda... but really everything is different depending on whether you're running X on the monitor and the TV or X just on the monitor, and you output to framebuffer which is on the TV, or any odd combination of these things. Really, this is a matter of what media player are you using? And what video card?

Cheers,

Sorry for the lack of information... My v-card is Nvidia Ti 4200 VIVO. I don't yet know what mediaplayer I will use, because I hav'nt tested to many yet. But the only thing I need the tv for is for watching movies. And the best would be if i could output the video to tv in fullscreen while running 1024x768 and other apps on the monitor while playing video in the background.

My tv is a 28" pal, I live in sweden so I guess it will be PAL-M or G, don't remember. I'm outputting s-vhs to my vcr, then from vcr to tv using composite cable.

BTW 1: What if I screew up the x86config file, how do I restore it without an image on any screen? Boot with command line? How do I do that?

BTW 2: I would lika an jukebox/organiser for all my media files (video/audio), in witch I can sort by Artist, genre, dirs, and so on. Know of any?

Hope this will do better, and thanks in advance!

You want something like spanning the desktop across two screens, but I have not done it. Do a search on twinview and xinerra.

Yep, but it depends what setup you pick and how motivated you are learning X Window server. If you used clone in twinview. You can hit ctl+alt+- or ctl+alt++ it will then zoom in or out of the default resolution.

Easy if you are using lilo type linux 3 and login as root. Next type xfdrake.

You can go extrem and install apache. Then make a few perl scripts read the information from multiimedia files. If you do not want to do that, search the internet.

mplayer is probably the best media player for Linux and it supports xinerra.

BTW, the video capture from your video card will not work in Linux.
