TV OUT Issue
 

umm.. i have a compusa ati readon 9200se pci and i cant seem to get my tv out to work properly. when i play a movie my tv just plays lines. also if anyone has this card how do i turn it on and off and configure it and so on.. and if anyone knows of a site with information about this would be grateful

I dont have THAT card, but i do have an ATI card with TV out capabilities...
It will not put out a tv signal while there is a VGA or SVGA monitor connected, you have to physically unplug the monitor (DB-15) connector.
This might be true for your card too.

I have a Nvidia GForce FX5000 8X AGP and i need to know how to use the TV out.
I also have an Ati Radeon 9200 with tv out that i use in another linux box, and i dont know how to use it either. Where in linux do i turn it on? I know how to use both in windows but i dont know how to set it up in linux.

Kreater....sorry....ATi just kinda sux under Linux really so i've never run a non NVidia graphics card. Maybe you'll find something useful in the above NVidia readme, it covers a lot of stuff about X that you will need to get right for ANY TV out to work.

first you need to obtain the ATI drivers off their web page for your card. Then I believe that you can log in as root and type:

fglrxconfig

to configure the card (its text based so I'd switch to runlevel 3, run the program, then switch to runlevel 5 again to see your changes). DO NOT BOTHER LOOKING AT THE NVIDIA DOCS!!! They are pretty much useless when it comes to describing ATI card behaviour. The config tool is easy to use and the drivers are easy to find and install so you shouldnt have any more problems.

I had some success with a little program called atitvout. It would enable me to switch to and from TV output without booting my computer. I never got X to work with the TV-out, but using framebuffer I could still use mplayer to watch movies on my TV. It actually cloned the output showing the same movie in both the TV and CRT using the TV settings.

I have a friend with an ATI 9800 pro card (he has mandrake 10.1). He often switches between dual monitor and monitor/tv combinations, I just went through the fglrxconfig for each, saving a copy of xorg.conf for each one then I made a shell script that switched between the two xorg.conf versions and restarted X. That way there was no requirement to run the setup program again, and no requirement to manually reboot (there is no reason to physically reboot your system when changing it anyway).
