Turtle Beach Santa Cruz using ALSA on FC4

As I'm sure you can tell by the number of posts, I'm new to this scene... I'm currently running KDE in FC4 on a P4 equipped with a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz sound card.

Soundcard Detection reads:
Cirrus Logic CS 4614/22/24 [CrystalClear SoundFusion Audio Accelerator] (rev 01)
cs46xx

It's sound test, however, does not produce any sound out of my speakers.

I've read posts claiming the TB Santa Cruz has at least front speaker output support using ALSA. Frankly any sound is fine for now...

Thanks for any input. I'm brand new to the Linux desktop environment after experiencing the new MS Vista firsthand (blegh) but familiar with the terminal from previous FC server use.

Thanks so much,
Angelo Gladding

Have you, as root, run the following??

alsaconf
alsamixer
alsactl store

Although I'm not familar with FC4. I prefer a good distro. haha.....

haha, mmkay i get the hint

So I've been doing quite some surfing on Linux and I don't think I've come across a SINGLE fellow FC desktop user... Is FC best for serving purposes? heh so lost... Any suggestions? BTW, I've already tried alsamixer and set the volume to audible levels. The other two don't produce any results. I have a feeling I'll have more success with another distro. If you could point me in the right direction of a distro comparison (i'll google now) or if you have any personal advice, I'd appreciate it greatly. I'm looking to have apache/mysql/php running in the background even though it's a desktop (don't know if that makes a diff).

Make sure ADC and DAC are up to 100%. Though you do not need to set ADC, but it is required if you want to record. The ALSA suport for Turtle Beach Santa Cruz is up to six channels.

it really depends on your level of knowledge and ethusiasm.

If you're good on the command line you can't go wrong with Slackware. Notice how many people here are slackers?

If not then ubuntu is good. As is mepis.

Of course Debian itself should not be overlooked. Sorry for the dig. but i just dont seem the point in FC4.... I don't think it's better as a server at all.

Maybe try em all on different partitions....

i have mandriva linix and i was wondering how you use those commands to support the santa cruz, and how the drivers should be set up.
Thanks

Hi guys. I am new to Linux, I installed FC4 two days ago, and I have a TB Santa Cruz card as well. I couldn't get it to work with the ALSA drivers, so I downloaded and installed the OSS drivers. I got sound in tvtime, but all my other sound producing programs didn't like the OSS dirvers. Then I uninstalled the OSS and started monkeying around with the alsa mixer that comes up when you click on Applications >> Sound & Video >> Volume Control. When the mixer came up, I clicked on Edit >> Preferences. The volume control preferences dialog box opened and there was a list of preferences (go figure) with check boxes next to them. All the way at the bottom of the preferences list was the option for External Amplifier. I have an external amplifier, so I checked this option. Upon checking External Amplifier, a Switches tab appeared on the ALSA mixer. I clicked on the tab and checked the box that said External Amplifier. Viola, glorious sound! Well, almost. The sound was quite overdriven. I have a DAW on my Windows partition, so I noticed this sound was the microphone overdriving, so I turned the volume on the microphone (found on the Capture tab of the ALSA mixer) down and then I was truly enjoying glorious crystal clear sound through my TB Santa Cruz card. Isn't it amazing how one simple config setting can make everything better?

I hope this helps others with the TBSC card and ALSA drivers.

Ah finally some other TB S/Cruz owners... After running a search on LQ I found more posts under "Distros/Fedora".
I made the switch from RD9 [which it worked fine] to FC4 and was disappointed the card drivers didn't work.
From my other post:
Quote:
Yep, I've found since moving from RH9 to FC4 I've had similar issues. Typically I'd get an error on boot up stating "invalid argument - sound being set to null".

I was able to get my sound working by:
-> I tried all the "audio devices" under control center>sound system>hardware. And found that "autodect" worked the best, [your setting may be different?].

-> I unchecked "Auto-Suspend" at the bottom of "General" and all my system notice sounds came up.

-> I ran kmixer" and made sure that "external amp" was enabled. One issue I had was after enabling the volume control [under "kmix configure>settings"], it disappear when I closed the program.
I found instead of closing the program, I right-clicked on the speaker icon and selected "hide mixer" and it's worked ever since. I wasn't able to find this info in Help so I just experimented.

-> I verified the settings mentioned above in "alsamixer" [run in terninal]. Tab to "all", arrow to output, and select "m" to mute or unmute.

-> Checked my "Blacklist" file [under /etc/hotplug/], and removed the driver for my soundcard. Use this with caution, there may be a binding issue, but have to say my sound works now.

-> Lastly I noticed in Linux, that the actual sound volume is between 85-100%, the sliders offer very little resolution. Many have found just turning them all the way up gave them sound...
Good Luck..
HTH

I added External Player and got a big screech! At least I know something is working!! My dilemma is that I can't hear any sound except when I talk into the microphone - my voice comes out the speakers. Sound tests, Realplayer, etc, don't work though.

I am VERY new to linux, using Fedora 4 with the TB Santa Cruz. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Below is the information requested in the post, "before you post: what to include in a hardware question"

The last segment, from /sbin/lsusb shows: Bus 002 Device 003: ID 0932:1112 Crescentec Corp
This is my webcam, which for some reason Fedora thinks it is another audio Device (it has a tab in GNOME: Desktop / System Settings / Sound Card Detection).

I also have a TV Tuner Card in my system - but I'm not sure where that falls into the list below - it's a PCI card

As per your request, I will go into further detail.

In the gnome-volume-control (Applications >> Sound & Video >> Volume Control), I have the following settings.

Playback Tab
Master at 100%
PCM at 90%
Headphones and PC Speaker are both muted (a little red "X" is over the speaker symbol at the bottom of the slider).
Make sure Master and PCM are not muted.

Capture Tab
Any channel you want to capture sound from must be selected via Edit >> Preferences. Also select ADC and DAC. All capture channels should be unmuted, and there should not be a little red "X" over the microphone symbol at the bottom of the slider either. If you just want to monitor, but not capture, then the channel should be unmuted, and the microphone symbol shoud have a little red "X" over it. Make sure that you are monitoring both ADC and DAC, and that both the ADC and DAC sliders are up at 100%.

Switches Tab
This tab appears when you select Edit >> Preferences and check the External Amplifier box. Make sure that the External Amplifier box on the switches tab is also checked.

If all you get are screeching noises, then one of your capture sliders is turned up too high. It's most likely the Microphone slider. I believe the TBSC has an onboard amplifier for the microphone in, so that captuer slider does not have to be turned up too high.
