TTY's not working, switching TTY's does nothing

Ok this is a really strange one and I have to assume it has something to do with the video driver. I am using the latest version of Mepis linux and it is fully updated.

Using CTRL+ALT+(F1-F6) does nothing and I mean nothing.

Killing Xorg using "killall X" leaves me with the black screen of death and then nothing works until I kill the laptop by holding the power button.

There is no xorg.conf so everything is done with autodetection.

The video card is an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 6370M.

I really wanted to tinker with DirectFB but neither my TTY's nor my framebuffer works. :-(

First thing I would try is disabling a couple kernel modules and see if that helps. Before you boot up, there should be some way of passing options to the kernel. (it may be an "F" key, eg F3) You leave everything showing on the command line, but add these parameters:

Code:
noapic nolapic acpi=off

Well...

Code:
 acpi=off
brought back my TTY's but now I have three new problems.

With this line added to the boot the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 6370M driver no longer works. I get stuck with a very slow VESA driver.

Creating my own xorg.conf using "X -configure" causes Xorg to try and fail to load the required driver and hangs the computer.

Also now my Broadcom 4313 Wireless card no longer works. lspci doesn't even show it as it did before. Pressing the wireless power button ejects the CDROM drive and hangs Xorg leaving me with the black screen of death.

Also it won't reboot or shutdown by normal methods. Doing so results in the... black screen of death forcing me to manually press and hold the power button.

That confirms the problem is with how the kernel is handling the hardware. I would try another kernel, if SUSE is like other distros there should be a plain vanilla kernel from the kernel development upstream, that has not been altered by the SUSE development team in any way, except to package it to install on a particular release. It's labeled "kernel-linus..." in the Mandriva repositories, for instance. 9 out of 10 acpi problems apparently are caused by some "optimization" the developers have wrangled, because using the "linus" (upstream) kernel fixes them.

I would imagine there's a community around SUSE as well, someone may be compiling/packaging the latest kernel(s) or doing their own optimizations and making them available to the community. If there are other 'unofficial' kernels available try one or more of those. In this case, I've found that the very latest cutting edge kernel version is not the best choice, if you're trying to fix a hardware problem. eg there's a 2.6.29 kernel and 3.0.3 kernel available from 3rd parties (not official packages) for the machine I'm using at the moment, but the 3.0.3 is as broken as the 'official' kernel supplied with the distro. I have to use the 2.6.29 kernel on this hardware.

There's no problem with installing as many kernels as you like, so long as you have enough disk space in the / partition. You just boot whichever you want, off the first boot splash screen. Kernels do not "update" existing files, they install separately and 'live' parallel to one another.

If none of the kernels you've installed helps, just boot back into the original and remove them. But in my experience, an un-SUSE-fied upstream or third party kernel is likely to fix this.

Meantime, there's probably a bug reporting system at SUSE, you should let them know they've got a bug with whatever your specific hardware is.

Ok this is a really strange one.

All I had to do was install grub legacy over grub2 using puppy linux and manually update the configuration file and poof now everything works.

Very very strange. I guess my bios doesn't like grub2? O.o
