Trying to get a HP scanjet 4200C up and running...

Hello,
Well I have a Hp ScanJet 4200C now; and I've never applied a patch
to get it working. The instructions at source forge aren't clear to me.
Its still unclear where it goes to get the scanner working. Where is this sane source code file
where it is apparently inserted? Well, I couldn't get it straight where to put all the backend files.

Well, I think its the sane.d file; but I'm new at this.

I did download the backend which gave me files to get it working.
I've set up printers using cups; and other things I've configured
with the command line; but getting scanners that are supported is new for me.

If any experts are out there; I would need a step and step follow through.

I've been online; trying to find some newbie like myself who already had it
explained to try and tackle it myself; but I couldn't anything concrete to get
started.

Well, I have the backend files. Now where do I go from here?

Any help at all would be apprectiated. Thank you.

Which distro are you using? There may be pre-packaged binaries that'll help you get this set up easier...

OS I'm using...

thanks for your reply. I'm using Libranet 3.0. I searched through the modules when
typing in modconf. There's nothing I see that's helpful for HP scanjet 4200C.
Well, as I said I have the backend files; I simply need to know where to put them.

Since writing the above; I have found the /etc/sane.d file and used the
cp command to to copy it into sane.d file from my home file. Although
this didn't do anything I at least found the place where I believe the
patch should go. Still no answers from pros who would resolve this; but
I'm determined to get a scanner going with my debian OS. I also found a manpage called sane-usb which has useful information and I found on ebay
some reasonablely priced Microteck scanners which have modules to activate in my Kernel. If no answers in the next several weeks I'll buy a Microteck and see if I can get it working.
Well, meanwhile, any help to get the HP scanjet 4200C going would be
appreciated.

There is new support for the HP 4200C

If you go to the SANE project, you will find new support for the HP4200C. (www dot sane-project dot org.)

Now if only there was support for the HP 3970 that my son gave me ...
