trying to determine speed of pci-e 1x vs pci slot

So I have this old dell dimension computer I use for a server.
It's maxed out with 2gb of ram, clocked at 533mhz
It has onboard video with 8mb of shared video memory
and an onboard 10/100 ethernet port. It also has audio but i have it disabled in the bios.
I'm using this computer as a file and dhcp server for a local network.

It has 2 (and they're both empty) PCI slots and 1 (also empty) pcie 1x slot.
I wanted to get a gigabit card as I do a lot of transferring of very large files to and from the server.

when i called upon lshw to tell me if my pci slots were 32 or 64 bit i noticed that it is telling me that all the slots, even the pci-e are all 32bit 33mhz.

If this is true, then is my pci-e slot limited to 133 megabytes/sec instead of the 500 that i was expecting or am I misunderstanding how the bandwidth is calculated?

anyway, below is the output of lshw:

AGP got up to 8X and the pcie was supposed to be better, so 33Mhz is surprising.

IIRC if you have a card in it with a 5V rail, it will default to 33 Mhz. At 3.3, it does 66Mhz. For 100Mhz & higher, you need lower voltages.

You cant trust the lshw 32bit 33MHz output, its not true (and I forget the technical reason for that now).

If you got gigabit, you are still limited to 125MB/sec. The bottleneck will be your HDDs, 125MB/sec is faster than your WDC WD5000AAKS will ever get in 'the real world', and most of the time the HDD will be a lot slower.

BTW, your motherboard chipset (Intel 915GV) is PCIe 1.1, not 2.0/2.1, so it is a 250MB/sec slot, not 500.

Also, the 910/915 chipsethave been know to have problems with PCIe.

@cascade9: Remind me to run any future purchases past your eagle eyes :-D. I'm sure you'd have talked me out of this laptop I have here.

Thanks for the compliment business_kid. :D I dont know how good I am at talking people out of stuff though...

I got this(cheap) in 2008 and then found out the hard way The RS690 is a piece of crap as a video chip. The chipset (AMD RS690/SB600) is congenitally incapable of 64 bit DMA in a 64 bit box. The video aperture was up above 4G and kernels would say "That's ridiculous. I'll ignore that and make one here." so it used twice the space for video. I have waited until Slackware-14.0 for the video drivers to catch up so movement onscreen keeps up with sound and is not jerky. I watched a documentary last night on an external hd monitor @ 1920x1080 and video kept up. That's a first for me from this.
How much of that would you have spotted back in 2008?

cascade9 10-30-2012 03:53 AM

I'm not sure how much of that I would have picked up in 2008. About all I can say for sure it that I probably would have warned you away from ATI chipsets...they werent that great IMO.
