Trouble with hibernate/suspend

I am beginning to think that I am having a hardware issue, since I have had hibernate/suspend problems with every OS I have tried on my Dell.

Running a Dell with a Pentium 4 (more info available if you tell me what you need to know). I just installed Fedora 12 on it. It goes into hibernate just fine, but when I try to come out, the screen goes black and will not do anything. Have to do a hard shut down and reboot. Not good for the computer or my nerves.

I think it might be hardware because I have installed six or seven different distributions, with three different desktops (Gnome, KDE, and XFCE) on this machine, and none of them will hibernate or suspend properly. I do not want to shut down and start-up each day, I would rahter go into low power mode and save the life of the hardware.

So to the people who know about hardware, does this sound like a hardware problem? Or does it sound like software, and I could fix it with a good install from a professional disk (all the ones I have used have been homemade on my other computer, which is currently running Mint 8 LXDE CE just fine).

One possibility that occurs to me is that maybe you do not have enough swap space to use for suspend-to-disk. How much do you have, and how much memory are you using in normal usage?

Same here. After suspend/hibernate I have only a blackscreen and also have to do a hard reset on my laptop. I'm using Slackware 13.1.

Any thoughts? Any ideas?

Got these informations with the top command.

Swap: 2441872k total, 5756k used, 2436116k free, 553512k cached
Isn't that enough?

0zMe..,I need some extra information

0zMe..,I need some extra information...:)
your dmesg output...
Code:

dmesg > /tmp/dmesg.out
your laptop model..especialy the graphics card model..
And can you confirm that if you can still ping your laptop or ssh to it in "blackscreen" situation...

You have nearly 2.5 G that you could use; if, when you try to suspend, you are using less than 2.5G of ram, then 2.5 G ought to be enough to fit it into. if you are using more than 2.5 G of ram, then it could be more of a squeeze. How much memory are you using in normal usage?

From a noob of a couple of weeks - these are all potentially helpful answers. I also experienced a dodgy start-up issue and concluded that if my ethernet cable was attached to a router then I should ensure the router is powered up before opening the lid. Just a thought!

but I believe this might have been related to having changed the boot sequence prior to installing Mint from a CD . . .
