Trouble with 120gb & debian

Hi,

I'm currently (since 3 days exactly)
trying to set up my file server under debian.

For each install, i'll get these messages when
trying to copy something on harddrive
(Occurs when ~1gb has been copied) :

ext3_readir : bad entry in directory [...]
[...]
attempt to access beyond end of device [...]
--edit
after this, i can't reboot system..
(no kernel data, or cannot mount /)

I've tried Debian 3.0r0 & r1,
kernel bf24, vanilla and normal...

hd : maxtor dx9 8mb cache
mobo : elite k7s5al (also tried on abit k7v-t)

Is it an hd prob ? bios ? kernel special set up ?
do I active SMART in bios ?

I'm lost! (and cant find something in google groups)

thanks.

Ew. Short of some tricky messing about with the xpert options in fdisk I'd just wipe out the partitions, reboot and install from scratch.

SMART won't be an issue until you install smartsuite or the more recent (branched) version (sorry - I forget the name).

Have you exprerienced this sort
of problem before ?

I can't understand, at work I've installed
a 120gb IBM disk on an old athlon mobo,
and installed Debian 3.0r0 on it...
->>no prob

What will I do ? try expert tweakings in fdisk ?
Review disk geometry ?

The CHS settings _may_ be the cause, but only if you've messed with them directly. If you could post the C/H/S settings here someone may be able to offer more insight.
