tpb (think pad buttons), volume control inside of xfce

I'm trying to get the IBM ThinkPad buttons on my laptop to work. I have a T43 laptop.

I have installed "tbp" on slackware and am manually loading it after xfce starts. In xfce, the volume managers do not seem to recognize the change, but in KDE, when I change the volume, the mixer reflects the volume that the buttons set. Does anyone know if there is a way in xfce to sync the laptop's volume level's with the mixer's?
