Toshiba satellite S1800 cannot restart

I have recently installed Debian 6.0 to my old Toshiba satellite S1800 laptop, and it fails to restart when I say System - Restart in Gnome main menu or type reboot under root. It shuts down gdm3, so I see the text console, then there are some text lines, the last two of them are
Code:
[ some number ] Restarting system.
[ some number ] machine restart
and then nothing happens. If I try to shut down instead of restarting, computer shuts down ok, but I would like to be able to restart it remotely.

In a terminal Try:
Code:
shutdown -r now
which is reboot or:
Code:
shutdown -h now
which is halt.

control+alt F1
Code:
reboot

shutdown -r now does the same as reboot, system hangs after the line "machine restart" I tried reboot before, see my first post. reboot from text console fails in the same way.

OK how bout:
Code:
/etc/init.d/gdm3 stop
and do
Code:
reboot
You may want to do:
Code:
apt-get update
and do a
Code:
apt-get upgrade
You may also try shutting down the laptop and pull the power and the battery out to see if that may clear the problem.

I've tried all suggested soultions, but
Code:
reboot
still hangs at the same point.

I know that I can remove battery, but sometimes I have to reboot system remotely using ssh.

There are differences between a reboot, a hard reset, and a cold restart. I don't have this stuff in my head, but search for it.Reboot does least; reset (not usually available on a laptop) does more, and cold start does the most - rereading shadow bios into ram etc.

Humour me and try stopping acpi just before reboot. You won't fry anything in 10 seconds. Fix anything?

Depending on your distro

/etc/rc.d/rc.acpi syop
service acpi(d) stop
/etc/rc.d/init.d/acpi(d) stop

maybe just pkill acpid, & pgrep acpi to be sure it's gone.

I don't have /etc/rc.d, but neither
Code:
service acpid stop
nor
Code:
pkill acpid
does not resolve the problem.

ok, I'm out of firm ideas, something that doesn't happen very often. I suspect something not doing a proper reboot and it might be a 'known issue' with Toshiba owners, or owners of your particular laptop. Check that angle out on the web.
