I got RH9 installed on my Toshiba laptop, I couldn't get a resolution
higher than 800x600, although linux thought it as 1024x768 as
XFree86 defined in modes. I did a little research about this problem and
found some discussion on Intel 852/855 GM/GME, which is I had. I
applied the patch (projects.nudieman.com/500m/)
but nothing happened.
I have a Intel 82852/82855 GM/GME Graphics Controller and Linux
selected i810 as driver, is this correct?
Here's what I got:
00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corp. 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device (rev 01)
Subsystem: Toshiba America Info Systems: Unknown device 0002
Flags: fast devsel
Memory at 10000000 (32-bit, prefetchable) [disabled] [size=128M]
Memory at 18000000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [disabled] [size=512K]
Capabilities: [d0] Power Management version 1
It does work here at 1024x768 with xfree 4.3.99something.That was a cvs version a while ago xfree 4.4 should be fine. You'll need to use the i810 driver for xfree.
Kernel is 2.6.4 with /dev/agpart intel and direct rendering manager Intel 830M,845G.... compiled in the kernel - not as modules.
Please don't get confused; the xfree driver is i810 the kernel driver is Intel 830.
It seems that there are some BIOS's out there where you just can't get it to work but in my case I didn't need any patches or screwing around except for the cvs-version of xfree (which is old now anyway) and the latest kernel.

Thanks! I have a 2.4.20-8 kernel and XFree86 4.3.0-2, do you think I should get
a new kernel and XFree86?

Basically yes - my card didn't get a leg up with xfree 4.3 let alone 3d rendering. The kernel isn't such a big deal.A newer kernel just minimizes the xfree crashes and crash it still does if you try things like suspending to RAM too often and other things but that isn't really a big issue for me.
