Tools/configs for getting Canon PIXMA MX890 scanning working via wifi and Mint 17?

This issue has me running around in circles...

I've had printing working just fine, but scanning, using Xsane gives me:

"Failed to open device 'pixma:MX890_192.168.254.42': Operation not supported."

scanimage -L returns:
device `pixma:MX890_192.168.254.42' is a CANON Canon PIXMA MX890 Series multi-function peripheral

scanimage -T returns:
scanimage: open of device pixma:MX890_192.168.254.42 failed: Operation not supported
[NOTE: running via sudo doesn't change]

I have this sinking feeling that I'm clueless...

Printing and scanning are separate functions and require separate drivers. For the scanning side of your Canon MX, try installing the scangearmp driver package from the Mint repo (or download the .deb from the Canon website).

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Is Xsane obsoleted by scangearmp?
