TNT2 nvidia driver problems

i have a NVIDIA TNT2 AGP graphics card with 32 MB of RAM. I am running a 2.6.13.2 kernel and NVIDIA legacy driver version 7174. I cant install the kernel interface driver

ERROR: Unable to load the kernel module 'nvidia.ko'. This is most likely
because the kernel module was built using the wrong kernel source files.

kernel; on Red Hat Linux systems, for example, be sure you have the
'kernel-source' rpm installed. If you know the correct kernel source
files are installed, you may specify the kernel source path with the

I read somewhere on this forum that nvidia only supports linux kernel version greater than 2.6.11 with their non-legacy drivers. However, i cant use 7167 because it doesn't support the TNT2. Any Ideas??

julz_51 11-15-2005 05:50 PM

Did you make sure that you had the correct (same version) sources for your kernel when building the nvidia drivers ? If you had several source packages, did you specify the path of the correct ones as an argument to the nvidia installer ?
When using Fedora, I had a similar problem, because the sources yum downloaded were those of the most recent kernel, not of the one running on my system.

Samoth 11-15-2005 06:01 PM

i am running 2.6.13.2 and i have the sources for 2.6.13.2. however i do have multiple kernel sources installed and will try running the nvidia-installer with options to the current kernel.

P.S. thanx for the quick reply :-)

Samoth 11-15-2005 07:50 PM

OK....juiz_54 i did what you said with the -k 2.6.13.2 and it installed the driver. I changed my xorg file and booted X. however this didn't seem to fix the problem as it crashed when X tried to load the kernel module.

OKOK...i know that is a long one but that is everything i get.....it keeps on going too
Is this a problem with how i made my kernel

Charred 11-15-2005 11:38 PM

Try this:
Code:

rm /usr/src/linux
to remove the "linux" softlink, then reestablish it with:
Code:

ln -s /usr/src/linux-2.6.13.2 /usr/src/linux
Then run the Nvidia installer again.

Samoth 11-16-2005 06:42 AM

no, that does not work. i still get the same error message

julz_51 11-16-2005 10:23 AM

If you have a mean to check your kernel config file, do it. Maybe it was compiled without an important option, especially one of those concerning AGP and your chipset. Also check the readme file if you didn't. If you can't check its config file, I suggest you recompile your kernel.

I had trouble installing the 7676 NVIDIA driver for a TNT2 card when I was using a 2.6... kernel. Basically, NVIDIA said that that card was no longer supported by their new driver.

Please see:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/IO_18897.html

Quote:

The following products are not supported in the current ForceWare Release 75 driver.:
TNT2
TNT2 Pro
TNT2 Ultra
TNT2 Model 64 (M64)
TNT2 Model 64 (M64) Pro
.... & more in the list
Please continue to use the previous ForceWare Release 70 drivers available at http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html
But I couldn't get the older drivers to download.

Samoth 11-16-2005 10:53 AM

i am using a 7174 driver and all goes well until i start X11. then it complains aout my kernel module having errors in it.

Yup.
Your TNT card is not supported. Neither is mine. They are too old !

Possible solutions:

Go back to a 2.4.X.X kernel, and use an old driver. On my 2.4 kernel machine the driver 6111 works fine for me. But not with the 2.6 kernel.
Use the standard (slower) linux driver.
Buy a newer card.

Samoth 11-16-2005 03:06 PM

NVIDIA says they are. Maybe i dont understand you.....are you saying that my card isn't supported with a 2.6 kernel??

Charred 11-16-2005 07:59 PM

I'm currently running a TNT2 with a 2.6.13 kernel. I can't access the machine to tell you which driver version I'm using as it's in the baby's room and she's asleep for the night. If you need to know, I can tell you tomorrow.

Samoth 11-17-2005 06:35 AM

That would be great :-)))). Would you maybe post the relevant parts of your kernel .config file. the problem may be part of my kernel

Charred 11-17-2005 06:55 PM

NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7174-pkg1.run

This is the latest release for the "legacy" GPUs, AFAIK.

No agpgart support configured.
No Nvidia framebuffer support configured.

Just a heads up, you may find your mouse not working after you install the module. It's always worked perfectly with the 2.6.12.x kernels, so if you have problems, you may want to roll your kernel back. I'm afraid I can't tell you more than that; I don't use this computer much anymore, so I haven't really tried to find out why, and I don't know that I could even if I did.

Hope I helped!

Samoth 11-17-2005 07:47 PM

Actually i got the driver running earlier today. The problem was with my 2.6.13.2 configuration file. I had agpgart compiled directly into the kernel instead of as a module. After i changed that the nvidia driver worked great. I hope this helps for other users
