there is no sound all of a sudden, mandrak 10

hi,
just installed mandrake 10 couple of days back and i could hear the sound from the speakers. now nothing comes out. checked the system configuration and when i clicked the test sound and test midi button i get the information error dialog box error, saying

cannot find /dev/dsp , no such file or directory.

didnt delete anything at all , just trying to figure out how to mount my dvd which does make lots of changes to the fstab file.

Have you checked your modules?

Check the output of the lsmod command to see if the kernel modules for your soundcard are loaded.

If not, you can first try using the Mandrake control center - goto System > configure your computer > hardware > hardware then select your soundcard. Then press the "run config tool" button.

If that doesn't work then you can manually enter the required modules into /etc/modprobe.preload, one module per line. All modules listed in this file are loaded automatically on startup.

Hope this helps!
