i see you use mandrake, it is more than likely that you have a framebuffer console.
as you boot up pass vga=0xfffd or vga=-3 to the kernel as a boot option, this will allow you to choose the video mode. if by choosing one of the text mode options the problem is solved then there is some sort of incompatibility between the ati frambuffer kernel module and the X one, you should report the error to the developers of both. if you still have a problem with a vga 80x25 display then there is something really weird going on.
