text mode trouble

after getting my xf86 to work with the new video card (radeon 9000) whenever i go into text mode, the screen is a whole bunch of lines!! there is still color in the text mode, and commands still work, i just cant see what the heck im doing. anyone?

P.S. does anyone know a quake 3 benchmark that doesnt require quake 3?:study:

How are you switching to text mode?

LavaDevil94 08-01-2003 06:47 PM

im using the keystroke ctrl-alt-f1. i didnt know it would make a difference. also, i forgot to post this earlier: the text mode is ok as long as X hasnt started yet.

camelrider 08-01-2003 08:12 PM

Try using <ctl><alt><f2> instead. The first tty is already busy after you startx.
(<alt><f7> returns you to the gui that was started from f1.

LavaDevil94 08-01-2003 08:18 PM

i tried f1, f2, f3, f4, and i got the same result. do you have any ideas? by the way, thx for the alt-f7 keystroke. i didnt know it existed.

LavaDevil94 08-02-2003 12:26 AM

can someone please help soon? not being able to go to text mode is a severe weakness.

slakmagik 08-02-2003 12:46 AM

Simple thing - type in 'clear' and see what happens. :)

LavaDevil94 08-02-2003 12:59 AM

even after i type clear, it still has the lines. i wonder whats the matter w/ it. text mode is hard to screw up as far as i know.

slakmagik 08-02-2003 01:16 AM

Crap. Well, there's this command I don't fully understand but 'tput init' might do something and I don't think it would make it any worse. *shrug* Not really sure.

Yeah, I thought it was hard to screw up, too. I don't understand a lot of things *heh, understatement* and I really don't understand the terminal initiailizations and termcap stuff and so on. My guess is that somehow X is resetting values for your terminals that are screwing them up - when it changes the display it's not putting it back.... something like that. Hope someone can help you out. In the meantime, I guess explore the wonderful world of rxvt. :)

LavaDevil94 08-02-2003 10:07 AM

tput init didnt do anything either. at the start, i didnt think that X had anything to do with it, cause its the gui and this isnt. but i think ill check it out. if you have anymore ideas, let me know.

LavaDevil94 08-10-2003 07:35 PM

ne1 have any ideas? this is getting really stupid, and so far this is the only problem im having under linux. i tried the 'tput init' command, and all it seems to do is put 2 p's before the user and directory prompt. if i cant get linux 2 work, i cant use nething, cause windoze failed me.

LavaDevil94 08-12-2003 07:46 PM

im sorry to keep whining, but this is getting REALLY bad. i tried booting without auto X, but i cant get dri/ 3d accel when i boot X manually. please, someone, anyone.

is your console a framebuffer console or a standard vga console? if its a framebuffer console then its possible that the new driver you installed is not tidying up after itsself when you switch from x to a virtual terminal. if you do have a standard vga console then i cant possibly imagine whats happening.

LavaDevil94,

how about:
reset

in the command line?

LavaDevil94 08-14-2003 11:03 AM

how would i check if its a framebuffer? i think it is, because i just had to reinstall my system, and the problem occurs only after the drivers were installed. i have a radeon 9000. by the way, reset did something, but i couldnt see what it did, since it didnt fix the problem.
