I'm using linux-2.4.23, and also devfs with the devfsd daemon. I also am trying to install alsa. My problem is my sound card nowhere in the /dev tree. I checked out the /proc/pci file and it appears in there. what am i doing wrong? I have a gigabyte ga7vrxp motherboard with a VIA KT333 Memory/AGP/PCI Controller (PAC), and a VIA VT8233A(CE) Integrated Peripheral Controller (PSIPC). and i have 5 PCI slots supports 33MHz & PCI 2.2 compliant, and my io control is IT8705. in the /dev tree the sound dir is empty. when i run alsactl store it complains i have no sound card.
No i have disabled my onboard sound because i have a terratec-dmx-6fire. A low latency sound card with a breakout box. I installed the alsa-1.0.4 driver, the alsa-1.0.4 libraries, then the alsa-1.0.4 utilities. I set up a bootscript for alsactl so i can save and load mixer settings on bootup bootdown. I new the script would complain if i didn't have a /etc/asound.state file so i did this
touch /etc/asound.state &&
alsactl store
then it complains
alsactl:save_state:1061:No Sound cards found...
if a run
$ls -a /dev/sound
$.. .
thats all i get my dmx-6fire shows up in my /proc/pci file.
what's up? How do i get the device nodes for the card I followed the alsa instructions for the driver installation made necessary additions to my /etc/modules.conf, and ran depmod. The only deviation was i was trying to make my own boot script.

di you actually run the alsaconf program, sounds like it can't find the card. about /dev/sound, i don't have one either, i do have /dev/dsp, which i believe would be the sound device.
$alsaconf
/usr/sbin/alsaconf: line 33: [:too many arguments
/usr/sbin/alsaconf: line 35: [:too many arguments
/usr/sbin/alsaconf: line 176: which: command not found
/usr/sbin/alsaconf: line 179: which: command not found
Erorr, dialog, or whiptail not found

I have no idea what it means, so i am confused. For the /dev/sound I use devfs and i beleive all the symlinks it creates are there. The devfsd daemon the should create symlinks for the old naming scheme like /dev/dsp. How can i tell if the alsa modules actually loaded?
Alright thanks man i don't know why i didn't follow those in the first place. my whole mess is sort of solved. The only problem i have is those modules don't load at boot or when i request the sound card. I have to manually load them. I set up my /etc/modules.conf file as described by alsa. I ran depmod -a and that didn't work. I should also memtion these are the first modules i have installed outside the modules included in the kernel source. I feel I should also mention I'm using linux-2.4.25 now.
