System Power Down, Mandriva 2006

Hi folks,

Having power down issues with my system and monitor on shutdown of Mandriva 2006. My computer isn't new - My monitor is a Generic Targa 17'', I have the Riva TNT2 graphics card - though no visible issues with graphics/display while running Linux, and Mandriva does detect both of these.

When I first installed Mandriva 2006, Mandriva would shut down correctly, EXCEPT the system wouldn't power down (monitor black but everything switched on). This happened when setting "enable ACPI" to ON. I ballsed up Mandriva with Ubuntu install, so now I've reinstalled it again.

On reinstall, I disabled this option. Now what happens is quite strange: The first thing I noticed now, is that whenever I reboot or log out, my monitor very briefly shuts off, and i get that quick "no signal or cable disconnected" message on my monitor, but then everything comes back up again fine. On shutdown, my system itself WILL shut off BUT the monitor wont, and starts rolling through colour flashes on the screen (i.e screen goes red, then blue, then green etc). I've never seen such a thing. I also went into the boot option and put "enable ACPI" back on, but the colour thing is still there.

The same thing happens when I boot to Windows XP Pro, and shut down through that interface. I can only remedy it by turning the monitor off at the power point.

Btw, so you know, I'm a total Linux newb (talking, a few days here). I'm also writing to you through Windows, because the 3 Lin distros I've installed won't read my winmodem (which may I say, is really disappointing - but that's another saga). I've found a few sort of related posts, but I didn't understand them - too much assumed knowledge hehe

Please try and be patient with me; you may have to go into more detail about where/how exactly I type in the commands or what have you. Thanks very much

This is normal. The graphics card is changing resolution/frequency and so the monitor briefly (or not so briefly with some cards) will not be receiving a signal.

As far as shutdown is concerned, I assume your monitor is powered independently of your PC (plugged into a separate socket, not the PC PSU)

Once the system is down the monitor's behaviour is independent of the PC. One would expect it to automatically go into standby mode but I can suggest 3 possible explanations why it does not.

1. There is a monitor setting, accessible from the on-screen menu, which affects what it does.

2. The circuitry which controls the monitor going into standby is defective.

3. There is some sort of stray signal being fed from the PC tp the monitor. If you switch the PC off from the mains does the monitor still behave the same way?

hi Im a newb to but i had a similar problem with the poweroff.
If your using LILO as your boot loader you might want to try the following:

AS root go to /etc/lilo.conf

and in the append line ad something like acpi=force

this is my lilo.conf
# File generated by DrakX/drakboot
# WARNING: do not forget to run lilo after modifying this file

boot=/dev/hda
map=/boot/map
default="linux"
keytable=/boot/la-latin1.klt
prompt
nowarn
timeout=100
message=/boot/message
menu-scheme=wb:bw:wb:bw
image=/boot/vmlinuz
label="linux"
root=/dev/hda1
initrd=/boot/initrd.img
append="devfs=mount resume=/dev/hda5 splash=silent acpi=force"
vga=788
read-only
image=/boot/vmlinuz
label="linux-nonfb"
root=/dev/hda1
initrd=/boot/initrd.img
append="devfs=mount resume=/dev/hda5"
read-only
image=/boot/vmlinuz
label="failsafe"
root=/dev/hda1
initrd=/boot/initrd.img
append="failsafe resume=/dev/hda5 devfs=nomount"
read-only
other=/dev/fd0
label="floppy"
unsafe

after adding the line you need to run lilo by:
in a console as root type lilo -v
