system memory leark

My linux server seems to be missing memory. When I first restart it, not that much is being used. Then after a week of it going out it's normal business I only have 12 out of 512MB free and its starting to spill over into swap, according to top. But I added up most of the processes listed there in top and it comes out to about 55%. I have no memeory left yet only 55% of it us being used by actual processes. Where's all the rest?
