System Freeze

Hi
I'm using Ubuntu Dapper .
I had system freeze when I had Windows some years ago, but when I switched to linux there were no freeze up 3 week ago, system freezes very frequent .
When system freezes none of keyboard, mouse, ... works, even I don't have monitor refresh.
I know that it's not kernel problem, SysRq is enabled but doesn't work when system freezes, so there is something with hardware.
I've tested RAM with memtest86 and after 3 passes no error found .
Now I think its something with VGA .
I have a S3 Savage2000 card that hase a broken fan on it!!
and as you know linux S3 driver doesn't support Savage2000.
my mainboard is GA-8IR533

What's your Opinion?
Is it VGA problem? or can be something else?

Thank you.

I would guess your chip is overheating and that causes the freeze. That's what many systems (including) mine do when there is overheating. Can you fix the fan?
cheers,
jdk

Hi
Thanks for your attention.
The fan is totally dead !
I installed another fan but no effect! it freezes again.

Hi Snigger,
Is the whole system frozen or just your x-windows? Can you clt-bksp to restart x? or ctl-alt-F1 to get to a virtual terminal? or is everything really locked up. I think my idea about the fan and overheating was wrong. On my system at least, nothing freezes. The power just cuts off.
cheers,
jdk

Hi, And Thanks again
Yes it's a whole system freeze , Alt+Ctrl+Backspace , Alt+Ctrl+F1/F6 , Alt+SysRq+R/B/O/... , and other s doesn't work, NumLock/CapsLock doesn't turn Off/On !
And atlast sometimes at boot time it freezes!
The Other thing is that proves it's not X problem (and other software things) is that I had this problem 4 years ago when I had Windows! and now it's back!

I'm thinking to buy a new VGA but first I want to be sure that problem is VGA.

Thanks again

Does it ever happen when you're in maintenance (single-user; no x-server running) mode? That might be a clue.
cheers,

I didn't used Single User /Terminal Only since freezes started, but as I mentioned sometimes (once or twice a day) it freezes at boot time (and boot is in Text mode too.)!
