system-config-display not letting me choose 2nd video card?
Hello. I've got an NVIDIA Quadro FX 4400 video card and 2 Dell LCDs (2001 and 1905, both digital). I'm trying to set up dual monitor support, however when I run system-config-display, it states "Trying with card: VESA drier (generic)", then displays the correct card in the GUI (and in /etc/X11/xorg.conf). When I click "use dual head", it never shows ANY video card options in "second video card" and when I click OK I get:
[root@host ~]# system-config-display
Trying with card: VESA driver (generic)
in hydrate_second
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/share/system-config-display/xConfigDialog.py", line 200, in ok
if card.getCardData()["NAME"] == self.secondVideocardOptionMenu.get_menu().get_active().get_data("NAME"):
so it looks like it expects SOMETHING in the "second video card" drop down.
This is on RHEL 4, and I went thru the NVIDIA driver update and installation process. It overwrote my xorg.conf and everything looks fine.
Any ideas how to get some value possible in the "second video card"??? I only have 1 card, but I infer from the cryptic error msgs above it still expects something there, and this card supports dual monitors.

With the current NVidia drivers, you can use the nvidia-settings tool to configure dual monitors in twinview (on the fly) or as multiple desktops (requires restarting X). The tool can write the changes to the X configuration file for you, so you don't have to try to configure it manually.
Thanks! Once I ran that everything works great. One thing: Dell's manual says the highest "preset" resolution on my secondary display (Dell 1905FP) is 1280x1024. That means the resolution cannot be higher than that, correct? I wonder if I can "post set" a resolution, like defining my own. My first display is 1600x1200 and the disparity is a little annoying, and the various "stretch" options in nvidia-setting didn't change anything.

If they indicate that as the highest resolution, then you can't exceed it or you may damage the hardware. It's sort of like overclocking your monitor, only monitors don't usually have water cooling systems and fans, so they just burn out.
Sell your old monitor on EBay, and get a new one ("Five brand new Wii email addresses and a monitor!").
