I have an Nvidia 5600 card running in Redhat Federo 3.0. I want to swap it out and put my ATI 9800 Pro card in to replace the 5600. Can I just swap them out and Linux will recognize the new card and install or do I have to run the video setup from the CD? Thanks

linux won't recognise the card automatically, but the old one's config will remain in the configs until you remove it. edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf (or XF86Config, not sure what fedora ships with...) and change the Driver "nvidia" line to match that of the new card... i've no experience with radeon cards at all, but i think they use a third party driver as do nvidia. search this site for more details on installing radeon drivers. eitherway, jst change that driver, and as long as the new driver is correctly installed, run "startx" and X should load.

Actaully it went very smooth. I shutdown the pc and swapped cards. Once It started booting into Federo 3.0 it detected my new card and asked if I wanted to remove the settings for the Nvidia card. I chose yes that it asked if I wanted to configure the new card. Was impressed how far Linux has come the 4 years since I last used it.
