Suse10.2 - Seagate external: mount problem
Hi!
I recently finished installing openSuse10.2 on my IBM T60 Thinkpad. As far I know everything is working fine except one thing: When I connect my 200GB external Seagate hard drive to the usb port then nothing happens. I have tried looking around for it but cannot find it. I have no problems connecting usb flash memory sticks however. My kernel is: Linux 2.6.18.8-0.5-default i686 From reading a similar thread at linuxquestions I have included the outputs of "dmesg"(last part) and "grep sd /var/log/messages" below, starting with "dmesg" Thanks!!! /Rafael Output from dmesg eth0: no IPv6 routers present IA-32 Microcode Update Driver: v1.14a <tigran@veritas.com> audit(1184404437.257:3): audit_pid=5232 old=0 by auid=4294967295 Non-volatile memory driver v1.2 input: /usr/sbin/thinkpad-keys as /class/input/input5 bootsplash: status on console 0 changed to on usb 1-2: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 4 usb 1-2: new device found, idVendor=0bc2, idProduct=0500 usb 1-2: new device strings: Mfr=51, Product=85, SerialNumber=59 usb 1-2: Product: Seagate Mass Storage usb 1-2: Manufacturer: Seagate usb 1-2: SerialNumber: 000000000000 usb 1-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice Initializing USB Mass Storage driver... scsi4 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices usb-storage: device found at 4 usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning usbcore: registered new driver usb-storage USB Mass Storage support registered. Try restarting the udev, hal and dbus daemons.
sudo /usr/sbin/rchal restart sudo /usr/sbin/rcdbus restart Open sysinfo:/ in konqueror. Is the drive listed? If so, can you right click and choose "mount"? Right click and select properties. If it is a vfat or ntfs drive, are the "Mount Automatically" and "Mount as user" boxes clicked. If is is an ext3 or xfs or similar Linux native filesystem, is "Mount Automatically" checked? Does a entry exist for a /dev/sdb1 in /etc/fstab? If so, try commenting it out. Run "sudo /usr/sbin/udevmonitor" before inserting the cable. You should see a flurry of messages as the event is handled. The fact that inserting the drive results in a device node being created (/dev/sdb1) indicates that it was detected and a device node created by udev. You can examine the information that udev sees with the command: udevinfo -q env -n /dev/sdb1. Keep in mind that the next time you insert the drive, /dev/sdc1 might be used instead. Especially if you had inserted a different drive since booting. |
Hi!
I performed the sudo commands, but when I afterwards opened sysinfo:/ the external hd drive still had not showed up. I then tried looking in /etc/fstab and this is what I found: dev/sda6 / ext3 acl,user_xattr 1 1 /dev/sda7 /home ext3 acl,user_xattr 1 2 /dev/sda1 /windows/C ntfs ro,users,gid=users,umask=0002,nls=utf8 0 0 /dev/sda5 swap swap defaults 0 0 proc /proc proc defaults 0 0 sysfs /sys sysfs noauto 0 0 debugfs /sys/kernel/debug debugfs noauto 0 0 usbfs /proc/bus/usb usbfs noauto 0 0 devpts /dev/pts devpts mode=0620,gid=5 0 0 So I didn't comment anything. I then turned the external of, ran sudo /usr/sbin/udevmonitor, and the turned the external on again. I went into /dev and I found sdb1 written in yellow and black, which to a newbie like me says don't touch. But is there some type of command I can run to mount it from /dev? Just a wild guess.. /Rafael |

If you did enter /dev/sdb1, then I think that the filesystem is bad or missing. Code:
udevinfo -q env -n /dev/sdc1 |
Hi again and thank you soo much for taking your time in helping me with this problem of mine.
To be sure I again ran the command udevinfo -q env -n /dev/sdb1 and got the following: rafaelhost:/home/rafael # udevinfo -q env -n /dev/sdb1 ID_VENDOR=ST320082 ID_MODEL=2A ID_REVISION=0000 ID_SERIAL=ST320082_2A_000000000000 ID_TYPE=disk ID_BUS=usb ID_PATH=pci-0000:00:1d.7-usb-0:2:1.0-scsi-0:0:0:0 I then tried fsck.vfat /dev/sdb1 and answered the questions put to me. This is what I got: rafaelhost:/home/rafael # fsck.vfat /dev/sdb1 dosfsck 2.11, 12 Mar 2005, FAT32, LFN No FSINFO sector 1) Create one 2) Do without FSINFO ? 1 Free cluster summary uninitialized (should be 2883833) 1) Set it 2) Leave it uninitialized ? 1 Leaving file system unchanged. /dev/sdb1: 21745 files, 3219626/6103459 clusters To see if something changed I ran the previous command again with the same result as before, and I also checked the sysinfo:/ but didn't find anything new... rafaelhost:/home/rafael # udevinfo -q env -n /dev/sdb1 ID_VENDOR=ST320082 ID_MODEL=2A ID_REVISION=0000 ID_SERIAL=ST320082_2A_000000000000 ID_TYPE=disk ID_BUS=usb ID_PATH=pci-0000:00:1d.7-usb-0:2:1.0-scsi-0:0:0:0 Then, just to check, I ran fsck.vfat /dev/sdb1 again and answered differently. The result was a lot of action going on in my external hard drive, but in the end I could not see any difference. rafaelhost:/home/rafael # fsck.vfat /dev/sdb1 dosfsck 2.11, 12 Mar 2005, FAT32, LFN No FSINFO sector 1) Create one 2) Do without FSINFO ? 2 /dev/sdb1: 21745 files, 3219626/6103459 clusters |
Can you mount it manually as root with
mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt and browse it as root? Vendor: ST320082 Model: 2A Rev: 0 0 Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 00 SCSI device sdb: 390721968 512-byte hdwr sectors (200050 MB) |
Yes I can! But it still doesn't show up in sysinfo:/. Is there some way to make it more easily accessible for normal users?
