Suse unable to detect hard drive on during installation.

Thank you for reading, firstly!

I'm having trouble installing SUSE 9.2 on my PC. My problem is, I'm sure, familiar; the Suse install utility doesn't detect my hard drive when it arrives at the partition-suggestion phase of the install.

I understand from reading the forums that my copy of SUSE is slightly out of date, but unfortunately purchased it in good faith.

In the forum, I found a suggestion to include the boot command "insmod=ide-generic" in order to workaround this problem. Being quite new to computing, I'm not even sure how, and when, to try this.

My PC compenents are mostly incomprehensible to me for now, so I'll just list them:

Intel(R) 82801G (ICH7 Family) Ultra ATA Storage Controllers - 27DF

Intel(R) 82801GB/GR/GH (ICH7 Family) Serial ATA Storage Controller - 27C0

SAMSUNG HD080HJ/P - Hard Drive

The Kernel of the SUSE installer is 2.6.8

Last, but perhaps not least, could somebody recommend an 80GB SUSE - friendly hard disk that I could purchase as a solution if all else fails, please?

Thank you very much for your help - sorry it's such a newbie query, but after today's research I'm still stuck.

Amy

Damn. I've got an unnecessary word in my title.

Welcome to LinuxQuestions.

SuSE can not detect the hard drive because it does not have the drivers for the Intel SATA controller chipset. I believe that SuSE 10 dose include support but if your not willing to go with another version or distribution then you will need to purchase a regular IDE i.e non SATA drive. Any make / model of IDE drive should work.

This is your regular IDE controller
