Unhappy SuSE 9.1 intel 852/855 dual display problem

I using SuSE 9.1 on a Dell X300 laptop, Intel 852/855 video chipset (Centrino). The video works right out of the box, on the laptop monitor - but not the external VGA port. I'm a newbie, and there's no easy GUI way to fix this. I'm ready to build packages (or the kernel) from source if needed, I'm not afraid - just can't find anything that will fix the problem (mighty Google has struck out, it seems). SuSE control centre claims I'm not set up for dual monitors, but under MS Windows I use an extended desktop streaching across my laptop and external monitor.

Are there any newer or hacked Intel 852/855 linux video drivers?

Thanks,
Brad

BTW, I got the Centrino wireless working with a source build of the latest ipw2100 driver + firmware.
