Suse 9.1 and TFT monitor
 

Is it someone who knows if Suse 9.1 support TFT monitors. I think of Samsung 710N, Samsung 172S or Nec 1760NX.

99% of all monitors will work with linux (probably 100%, but who knows).

The only information you need to know is your Hsync and Vsync (refresh) numbers. These should be autodetected anyway, but if you have a manual around, you can check it if there's a problem.

I run dual LCDs just fine (though not on Suse).

I got a brand new HP pavilion that included a 17" TFT monitor

model f1723 see here for data.

I've tried the suse 9.1 Live CD but the screen jsut goes black with a message "Cannot Adjust to input" or something. My actual Suse 9.1 install displays fine until after the splash and 'Kernel Loading' message, then does the same thing.

Is this unusal, I would've thought monitors would be one of the main things a recent distro like Suse 9.1 would have covered off???

It is (normally) possible to get the installation to work by changing the resolution. On the bootloader screen given by the installation CD or DVD (the one used to select Boot From Hard Drive, Installation, etc.) press the F2 key, and select a lower resolution. (Press return again to start the installation.) There are reports of 800*600 or 1028*768 working. Trial and error is needed to find one that works for you.

During the hardware configuration stage of the installation, have at look at the Graphics Card and Monitor settings. You may need to use the "Manufacturer Disk..." option to install the real driver, although it will find something that works. While there, look in the Expert tab, and make sure that DPMS is enabled, otherwise monitor powersave does not work.

For the Live CD, if you wait for loading to finish, you will probably get a working system in the end. Strangely, I have found that changing the resolution using F2 causes loading to stop part way through!

On changing from a CRT to LCD monitor on an existing installation, the splash screen may be lost. It is possible to recover it; I will add instructions if anyone is interested.

yeh, that's what's now happened with me, the installation freezes and goes no further.
