SUSE 10.2 on DELL Dimension E520
Has anybody tried to install SUSE 10.2 on a DELL Dimension E520? My computer freezes at the first menu on the CD. I checked the CD, it passed the test.
I stress, the (usb) kbd works fine from the start, but then goes dead when the first menu (the one with 1. Installation, 2. Boot from hard drive, 3. ... ) appears. The computer acts as if it's programmed to crash when one attempts to install any "other" OS.
System: My computer is a brand new E520 (that is, Intel processor), BIOS 2.3.2. I use SUSE CDs from OSDisc.com.
Any help greatly appreciated.
suse 10.2 on e520
I to had a lot of difficulty with this,
here is the answer.
Put in disk one (or dvd) restart machine-after dell boot logo press and hold the left shift key, that will get you to the boot loader with keyboard control. good luck
Unfortunately this did not work either. True, the boot process was affected by my holding the left shift key (there were a couple more menus and they all worked, i.e. the keyboard responded properly to them), but at the end when I reached the MAIN MENU, the one with "do you want to (1) boot from hard drive, (2) Install SUSE Linux, etc. the keyboard froze again. I am convinced that this computer is programmed to freeze when it hears the word Linux in any form.
Thanks, but the problem has not yet been solved.
Another problem I had was with the display setting,I had to resize my display down a size or two, (I could change it back later)
worth a try ( I didn't think it was a problem for you I just didn't want my flat panel on this computer) This is done asap on boot screen press F3
keep trying - whispered
which gets you to the text base install launcher. Then type linux and
your good to go. after the detection suse graphical install starts up
and detects the mouse and keyboard just fine.
Thank you, whispered and Dave. Your combined ideas have indeed solved the problem. To summarize for the future:
In order to install Linux on Dell Dimension E520 (Intel dual core)
1. boot from CD and press the left shift
2. in the first menu, "do you want the graphic interface?" answer "NO"
3. in the 2nd menu, type "linux"
From here on everything works without a glitch.
