Suse 10.0 and brother mfc-3420c why???

So here is the setup:
standard pc running suse 10.0
brother MFC-3420c connected via usb

I have tried useing a number of different drivers and when I test print, the printer says that it is reciving data but then goes back to standby. also suse can identify the printer automaticly.
I went to brothers website and downloaded MFC3420Clpr-1.0.4-1.i386.rpm when i try to install it using yast it all seems to go just fine but nothing happens after it is done.
I have played around a bit with the inner workings of lunix but by no means know what the hell I am doing.
any help would be greatly appreciated.
PEACE:scratch:

First of all, you need the package CUPS to run printer software properly. For brother printers, please look here:

http://solutions.brother.com/linux/s..._install2.html

If your printer is a multi-functional machine you probably need SANE as well for scanning.

Since you have SuSE, just go to YaST > Software > Add/Remove and look for cups and sane... If they are installed, fine. If not, do it!

Please install cups and sane through YaST prior to doing what brother explains on the link above.

so I looked through out YaST and could not locate cups or sane where would i find them?
