"superblock" failing cdrom mount

I cannot mount the CD-ROM after a Fedora 3 install. Using mount /dev/cdrom yields:

/dev/hdd: Input/output error
mount: block device /dev/hdd is write-protected, mounting read-only
/dev/hdd: Input/output error
mount: /dev/hdd: can't read superblock

When I try to mount the CD-ROM with KwikDisk I get the same thing:

/dev/hdd: Input/output error
mount: block device /dev/hdd is write-protected, mounting read-only
/dev/hdd: Input/output error
mount: /dev/hdd: can't read superblock
Please check that the disk is entered correctly.

This is the fstab file:
# This file is edited by fstab-sync - see 'man fstab-sync' for details
/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 / ext3 defaults 1 1
LABEL=/boot /boot ext3 defaults 1 2
none /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0
none /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
none /sys sysfs defaults 0 0
/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol01 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/hdd /media/cdrecorder auto pamconsole,exec,noauto,managed 0 0
/dev/fd0 /media/floppy auto pamconsole,exec,noauto,managed 0 0

Any idea whay the issue/resolution is? The "hdd" device will burn CDs and CD PLayer can be made to use this device, but I want to mount the same device as /dev/cdrom too. Any suggestions?

Thanks!
