suggestions for installing linux on a EPIA box
I acquired an old EPIA box. I'm not positive on the specs.. but I belive it is an old ~800 Mhz CPU with 128 MB RAM. I was going to put linux on it to mess around with. Some time ago I attempted to install FC3, it installed fine but then would lock up when in the GUI after about 30 seconds after starting it up; and lock up when in the console when the screen turned black after not using it for some time. When this happened I didn't have as much time as I needed to debug it..soo its been sitting here. I am wantting to get it running, j/w if anyone has any suggestions for a distro, or some tuning that I need to do for these older VIA CPUs. I have seen that many ppl use these mini-itx boards but not sure if one has to do a lot to get it running. Sorry for long post, and thanks in advance.

Hello,
Most important is that the VIA CPUs are i586 compatible, not i686. The distribution must support i586 target. I am running parts of Fedora Core 3 on an EPIA-CL without much problems ("parts of" = own kernel, own initrd+many libs and programs from FC3). Maybe you can find more info in the viaarena forum; http://forums.viaarena.com/categories.aspx?catid=28 Regards, L Ekman |
I have exactly the same problems. Did you find any solutions?
