Please help me with this strange (to me anyway) one.

Whenever I type, all my key presses have a 1 second delay before any corresponding action takes place. This includes action (shift, tab, back, etc.) keys. This does not happen in MS Windoes, only my Linux (Mandriva) OS. No problem with key repeat, after the initial delay.

It started when I was typing a document and a window popped up, saying something about "invoking something or other". I was in a hurry and instead of reading the message, just clicked OK.

Very frustrating, because I cannot get any work done in a reasonable amount of time. If I have to do a lot of typing, I have to switch to MS, type a document, then reboot Linux, open the text document and copy and paste into whatever application I am working on.

I'm a Linux newbie, so if you have a fix for me, please spell it out in plain English.

Does that mean anytime you try to type, regardless of application, you have the time delay? Or, does it mean anytime you use the same application you were using when the problem first occured?

What application were you using? OpenOffice.org Writer, Abiword, or some other?

It sounds like you've invoked the "slow keys" "accessibility" option. The pop-up window is displayed when you hold a (non-repeating) key down for "too long," and asks you if you want to use "slow keys." E.g., holding down the shift key for a ten seconds without typing anything.

If you're using KDE, bring up the "Control Center," got to the "Regional & Accessibility" section, then look in the "Accessibility" subsection to change it.

If you're using GNOME, look under System -> Preferences -> Accessibility -> Keyboard to change the setting.
