Stopping pcspkr/PC_BEEP on shutdown and restarting Xserver?

Hello All,

I've done many searches on Google and many forums, but I can't seem to find a workable solution to this problem...?
I'm trying to stop the Buzzing sound from happening when I restart the Xserver or even when I shutdown/restart my laptop. I've tried quite a few things but nothing seems to be working..

So far I've tried:
- blacklisting "pcspkr" in --> /etc/modprobe.d/50-blacklist.conf with this line "blacklist pcspkr"
- running "xset -b 0 0 0" --> sets the Buzzer to 0%, 0 pitch, and 0 duration
- running "xset -b" (which should set to 'off')
- running "xset b off" (which should also set to 'off')
- "rmmod pcspkr"
- "setterm -blength 0"

Also, I think I've a couple other things as well, but I can't think of any right at this moment...

Has anyone been able to successfully stop this buzz from happening either all together or just during X restart (I'd prefer just for this one, but it doesn't matter if it has to be for everything)?

My Laptop Specs:

# uname -a
Linux localhost 2.6.37.6-0.7-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT 2011-07-21 02:17:24 +0200 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

# cat SuSE-release
openSUSE 11.4 (i586)
VERSION = 11.4
CODENAME = Celadon

Running GNOME

If anyone has any suggestions please feel free...

EDIT/UPDATE:
Or maybe what I was thinking... If I can find out which Script gets run when you issue a "CTRL+ALT+Backspace". I can try to find which line of code executes the "Buzz/Beep" and comment it out or something like that... Just a thought.

Thanks in Advance,
Matt

You can try any of these methods:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php...C_Speaker_Beep

Personally, I disable it when I build the kernel. That stops it 100%, except for if the BIOS triggers it during boot.

I agree with you, the beep problem sucks, because there are multiple possible causes. Haven't dealt with it in a while though. If you are using gdm3 as a display manager, it also has a default beep that can be turned off in the config.

There is also a beep setting in alsa to mute/disable. If you have "gnome-alsamixer" installed, you can disable it there.

Hey Guys, thanks for the replies...

Is that done by just removing/Not including the module during build time of the kernel?

My main "annoyance" with this beep is when I need to restart the X Server.
It lets out an extra LONG sound that's more like a buzz then a beep. It's pretty loud
and I can only imagine the co-workers who get frightened by this LOUD and obnoxious buzzer.

I sort of have to use every now and again when I have to go to a meeting or what not and I
need to bring my laptop with me. So in order for me to get laptop screen active again because
it is plugged into a Dell Docking Station (aka. E-Port Replicator) is to restart the X server...

P.S. If anyone has experience with Docking Stations and the process of trying to remove their laptop
without having to restart X please check out this post below. I just thought I'd throw it out there just
in case anyone has any suggestions for that because that post and this one are sort of related.

Thanks again for the links you guys suggested... I'll check them out and give them a try.

Thanks Again,
Matt

Yes, you don't include pcspkr at all, not built-in or as a module. I always do this, because I have no need of annoying buzzing.
