Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Stopping Hardware detection from detecting external hard drive

I got a laptop with an external hard-drive that runs through pcmcia firewire card. It all works fine, except every time i boot my computer, the new hardware detection program stops it booting to tell me that the harddrive has either just been added or removed and do i want to configure it. It always works once booted up, what ever the hardware detection program says, i just wondered if there was a way to get it to ignore the hard drive when it scans on bootup, so it does'nt stop booting every time.

I am using Mandrake 10.0 community with a custom 2.6.3-9mdk kernel.
