I was thinking about getting a SSD to one of my Linux machines. I've read a lot about these and the importance of firmware updates, without running the latest version the SSD could be very unstable. Since there a so few Linux users we usually get left behind when it comes to updates and patches in general so I was wondering how the situation was on SSD-side. Can you install the updates or do you run the shipped version?

IIRC drivers and stuff mainly controlled by the kernel. Can someone confirm this?

OCZ provides a Linux firmware update client. Trim/gc are in the kernel. Running with an older firmware version is not a huge issue most of the time.

My favorite distributor doesn't sell OCZ and OCZ doesn't have this 2.5" to 3.5" metal plate(shown here) that Corsair Force GT have. I could switch dealer but I don't want my SSD to lay in the HDD tray unfastened.

Can you help me interpret post 4 and 5 in this thread: Firmware upgrade under Linux by dreamy in the Corsair Forum? I don't understand, how did it become acceptable? What exactly does admin mean? Do I have to have Windows installed to do so?

Update: For additional 130 SEK you can get their own 3.5" converter shown here (but not at the Norwegian webstore). So now I can choose between the fraudulent OCZ which doesn't care about desktop users or the corrupt Corsair which doesn't care about Linux users.

RTV works great to secure stuff.

My OCZ Vertex 2 came with a mounting bracket. From that corsair forum post it seems they dont have linux support - they suggest booting from a windows XP live cd in order to flash the firmware
